University of Minnesota

Veterinary Medical Center

May 2011

VMC Friends,

While the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) serves the region in many important ways, few are as mutually beneficial as access to clinical trials. VMC clinicians and clinical researchers work closely with colleagues across the College and University to develop new diagnostic and treatment options for large and small animals. The results of these studies sometimes yield benefits to human medicine as well!

Clinical trials give patients with serious illnesses access to what may become the next great breakthrough in veterinary medicine. They can provide hope for owners with few other options. In many cases, the cost of care is partially or fully subsidized by research grants to make that care not only possible, but affordable. In return, enrollment of a pet in a clinical trial helps drive veterinary medicine and public health forward. Clinical trials are a unique aspect of the VMC that help make us a global leader in animal health, as well as the leading provider of veterinary specialty care in the Upper Midwest.

I would like to introduce you to two exciting clinical trials currently underway here at the VMC. While your pet may not be affected by these common diseases, you may know someone who could benefit. Please feel free to share this information with your family and friends.

Dogs with lymphoma
Lymphoma , a malignant cancer of the lymphatic system, is one of the most common cancers in dogs. It is particularly common in golden retrievers, but can affect any breed. Dr. Jaime Modiano, an internationally renowned researcher with a joint appointment at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Masonic Cancer Center, is studying a potential new way of killing lymphoma-inducing cells. The study is looking for 10 newly diagnosed dogs with lymphoma. Dogs in the study will receive either an investigational drug or placebo in addition to a standard course of chemotherapy. This study will offset client costs up to $2,500.

Dogs with seizures
Seizures are fairly common in dogs, but we do not always know what causes them. They can also be frustrating to control medically. Dr. Ned Patterson is evaluating the use of intravenous Fosphenytoin for the emergency treatment of seizures in dogs. Dogs enrolled through the Emergency Service at the Veterinary Medical Center will receive standard-of-care therapy, then be randomly assigned to the drug or control group as an additional intervention. Up to $1,500 in client costs will be reimbursed for dogs that meet the enrollment criteria.

For more information about these and other clinical studies at the University of Minnesota, please visit the Clinical Investigation Center Web site at www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/current/ or contact Kathy Stuebner, research coordinator, at vcic@umn.edu or 612-624-2485.

Thank you,
